A series of spiritual experiences beginning in conjunction with the end of a career as a professional athlete has lead Louis towards the art that he produces. A channel has been revealed and the somatic experiences delivered serve to both inspire and deepen this channel that is so central to the work. The work serves to understand and describe these experiences more deeply.
The focus is primarily around the the experience of making the art with the faith that an energy, a vibration, is attended to and translated to the viewer . While there is immense appreciation and admiration for the many artist that have come before, and while no work of art is created in a vacuum, the work is created without reference or intent to hold any particular place or adhere to any specific aesthetic or artistic canon. Nor is it created with any specific preconceived notions or preference. What exists is the faithful dedication and practice of listening. Pressing a sensitive ear to the void, tuning in to the subtle background language of the natural world that occasionally comes to a crescendo, reminding us that it has been here beneath and behind our perception the whole time. The sharpening of a discernment to recognize the artists’ hand or mind as it were, in the work. The constant paradoxical effort of returning back to non-trying, quieting the mind to hear the whisper of the divine. The recognition of the essential participation that the artist must attend to, be a party to, to honor and serve this channel. The raw materiality of the tools at hand and various techniques are considered and worked with closely to deepen a relationship that allow the energy transmitted through this channel to flow unimpeded, unconstrained.
At its core, the production of the work is a meditation on finding and holding a clear channel. In some ways the work serves to describe these intense moments. Deepening this channel by honoring this gift through consistent practice, dedication, and gratitude.
Essential to the process of this art making is the persistent practice of allowing the mind to recede into the background, welcoming that which is always present, the Divine, to transmit its frequency. A relaxing of effort, a relaxing of the mind that allows the message and information to come through. Expression is found in the many layers, added and obliterated, considered and disregarded, planned and by chance. Invisible to the viewer but present nevertheless, as indispensable as the last mark made. Through this dance something ineffable is constructed, transmitting a frequency charged with the faithful engagement with this channel.
